Recipe for Italian Straw (Palha Italiana) flavored with Ninho Milk Powder, resulting in a creamy and firm sweet, ideal for cutting into small portions.
Recipe Video
Ingredients
- 1can de sweetened condensed milk
- 5tablespoons de whole milk powder (like Ninho)
- 1tablespoon de butter
- 150g de Maria cookies (or equivalent plain tea cookies)
- butter
- whole milk powder
Instructions
In a saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, the milk powder (five tablespoons), and the butter (one tablespoon) with the heat off.
Dica: Mix well to dissolve most of the milk powder before turning on the heat.
Turn on the heat and cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until the fudge reaches the consistency where it completely pulls away from the bottom of the pan.
Dica: The consistency should be perfect for rolling firm brigadeiros.
Turn off the heat and immediately mix in the 150g of Maria cookies, which should be coarsely broken.
Dica: Do not crush the cookies into very small pieces; larger chunks help the sweet look better visually afterward.
Transfer the mixture to a pan previously greased with a little butter.
Dica: If the pan is too large and you prefer taller squares, use only half the area of the pan and press the mixture down firmly.
Smooth the surface of the mixture in the pan thoroughly.
Dica: Try to make the surface as smooth as possible to facilitate the final cutting.
Allow the sweet to cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for about two hours to make it very firm.
Dica: Proper chilling ensures cleaner cuts.
Cut the firm sweet into portions. The number of portions can vary (eight portions resulted in taller sweets).
Dica: If preferred, cut into smaller cubes, as this sweet tends to be eaten in smaller portions.
Finish by rolling each piece of Italian Straw in whole milk powder.
Dica: Use more milk powder, to taste, to coat the little sweets.
